ADO Book Reviews
We'll review here those texts which are, or claim to be, about
ADO and related matters. We try to be current, but we do not always
go out and buy the latest edition of every book, especially if we
disliked the last edition. We try to be
fair, but disclaim responsibility for any errors or omissions.
This page has one section:
THE TOP 15 ADO BOOKS.
THE TOP 15 ADO BOOKS. We power searched the amazon.com
database for ADO or DAO or ActiveX Data Objects or RDS or MDAC.
So we exclude books if they are primarily about: SQL, VB, Microsoft,
or the web. We do not exclude books on ODBC or ADS.
These are our picks, in order by average user rating:
-
ADO 2.6 Programmer's Reference, third edition.
Sussman. 5 stars. Reference. Read
Lundquist's review of an earlier edition. Read
Kamath's review of an earlier edition. Read
a sample chapter. Read
table of contents.
-
Professional ADO 2.5 Programming.
Sussman et al. 5 stars.
Do not confuse with Sussman's ADO 2.6 book (above). Read
a sample chapter.
-
Sams Teach Yourself ADO 2.5 In 21 Days.
Wille and Koller. 5 stars.
For Visual Basic. Read
an article by Koller about ADO (in German).
-
ADO Examples and Best Practices.
Vaughn. 5 stars.
By a Microsoft employee who likes Visual BASIC. More a collection of
ideas and tips, than a reference. Read
a sample chapter.
-
Effective ADO.
Northwest Training Systems. 5 stars.
Well, it's a book (91 pages) but the main thing is the accompanying
Video CD material. It's a two-hour course that will play in most modern
DVDs or PCs. The examples are usable.
-
Serious ADO: Universal Data Access With Visual Basic.
MacDonald. 5 stars. With CD-ROM. Read
an article by the author.
-
Professional ADO 2.5 RDS Programming With ASP 3.0, second edition.
Papa. 5 stars.
Some coverage of the web and Oracle. Apparently the first edition was
Professional ADO RDS Programming With ASP.
Crawford et al. 4.5 stars.
Read
ercb's review. Read
Kamath's review.
-
Programming ADO.
Sceppa. 4.5 stars.
He did more than just copy the Microsoft documentation. Read
a sample chapter.
-
ActivePerl with ASP and ADO.
Martinsson. 4 stars. Obviously the choice if your host language is
PerlScript. Rather dense. Read
table of contents.
-
Sams Teach Yourself Database Programming With Visual C In 21 Days.
Robison. 3.5 stars. There are also books in the same series for Visual
Basic, Visual J++, Visual InterDev, and Active Web. A sample chapter is
available online,
Chapter 10: ADO.
-
Building Distributed Applications With ADO.
Martiner et al. 3.5 stars.
Heavy on Visual Basic. Read
Lever's review. Read
table of contents.
-
ADO Programming in Visual Basic 6
Steven Holzner. Prentice Hall, November 1999. 3 stars.
Some SQL Server and ASP coverage.
Holzner has written many books on many topics, including OS/2 Assembly
Language -- and my impression from that book was that Mr Holzner is
jack of all trades but master of none, so I'm wary of wasting money
on another Holzner book. Read the
table of contents.
-
Advanced Delphi Developer's Guide to ADO.
Fedorov and Elmanova. 3 stars.
Especially good for ADOExpress, and the authors know what they're
talking about -- but most people will find their communication method
heavy going, perhaps due to translation difficulties. Read
table of contents. Read
an article about ADO by the same authors.
-
Visual Basic Developer's Guide To ADO, third edition.
Gunderloy. 3 stars.
Not for reference. Read
a sample chapter.
-
Teach Yourself OLE DB and ADO in 21 Days.
Franckowiak. 2.5 stars.
Getting too old.
-
ADO 2.1 Developer's Guide.
McMahon. No stars.
Dated. Hard to get.
-
ADO: ActiveX Data Objects.
Roff. No stars.
Will be available in May 2001.
Read the publisher's blurb.
-
ADO Programming For Dummies.
Krumm. No stars.
Just published. The "For Dummies" books that we've seen are poor value.
Read
table of contents.
